Tibetan large bone skull bead, dating from the late 17th-early 18th century AD. Carved of yak bone, with very deep, hand-carved detail, a vertical hole through from top to bottom so it could have originally been suspended on a silk or cloth rope. In traditional Buddhism, a malas (prayer bead) was carved from yak bone, depicting a skull, and was used as a meditation tool with which to contemplate the meaning of life and death, representing the inevitability of death, and the limits of human knowledge.

An amazing piece of sculpture in its own right, with added shamanic significance. The bead itself is quite large, measuring 2 1/4” x 1 7/8”, with wonderful patina. With a custom made wood base with laser-etched information on the front (entire display measures 3”L x 3”W x 3.75”H). From an old New York City collection formed in the 1960’s.
