Founded in 2003 in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, Blackbird Vineyards began as a small Merlot-focused vineyard with a simple yet powerful idea: to create timeless, artfully blended wines rooted in Bordeaux tradition and elevated by Napa Valley’s expressive terroir. Our name, and our philosophy, pays homage to Merlot, the noble varietal at the heart of our story.

Over the years, our scope and ambition have grown—but our commitment to thoughtful, small-lot winemaking remains unchanged. Today, under the visionary direction of our owners, Julia and John Hinshaw, Blackbird Vineyards crafts Bordeaux-inspired blends that embody elegance, structure, and lasting character. The name Merlot comes from the Occitan word ‘merlau’ meaning ‘little blackbird’ – a nod to both the grape’s deep color and the shape of its leaves, said to resemble a blackbird’s feathers. This poetic origin reflects the soul of Blackbird Vineyards: a deep appreciation for the nuance, nature and the beautiful intersections of history, artistry, and agriculture.

Blackbird Vineyards’ Paramour possesses both sensuality and commanding structure. Cabernet Franc and Merlot have a fragile but irresistible chemistry that flourishes when climate, soils and seasons align. Paramour reveals the passion and harmony embodied in this love affair. Bright and youthful aromas of blueberry, cedar, toffee, violet, plum, fresh blackberry and raspberry envelop the nose of this classically styled Cabernet Franc-blend. A rich mid-palate with seamless flavors from start to finish of cedar, cherry, plum and dark chocolate. Paramour delivers a beautiful, long finish of cedar, black licorice, blackberry.

Emboldened by Cabernet Sauvignon, Contrarian possesses Blackbird’s signature aromatic richness alongside bold tannins that draw a striking contrast to the rest of the flock. Expressive with savory notes of tobacco, cedar, coffee and black licorice, Contrarian is the most powerful of the Blackbird trio. Great density with hints of tobacco, cedar, plum, black cherry and black truffle. Contrarian boasts a rich and elegant texture on the mid palate and finishes with plush tannins, black truffle, tobacco, coffee and black currants.
